The characters in this print spoke to me through medieval woodcuts and emerged in this image. People and animals go about their daily lives just as we do in our time. The simultaneity of quotidian activities is universal, though the particulars may vary. Far and near, they are close to me, to us. I identify most closely with the doll carver in the middle at the bottom. Yet I certainly would like to hear what the two women in the center are talking about and join the conversation. Do you see yourself and others you know in these images?
